3D Design Challenge: Crowd-Sourced 3D Printer Design with Interesting Engineering

Large Industrial 3D Printer



This design challenge involves the design of a large 3D printer for industrial applications. Most 3D printers are built around 3-axis cartesian robot architectures and combine the benefits of timing belt and ball screw actuators to move the end effector across the bed surface. Each axis can be driven by stepper motors to ensure precise positioning.


For this design challenge, participants must use Vention’s cloud-based 3D CAD platform and its readily available modular components to design a large industrial 3D printer.


Design Requirements

  • Largest part to print is 1m x 1m x 1m
  • All axes must be fixed in case of a power failure
  • Printer is self-standing (i.e. does not require an external structure for support)
  • Design is to include all functional components except for the extruder
  • System is to be integrated with Vention’s MachineMotion controller


The winning design will receive a $1,000 USD cash prize (Visa or Mastercard Gift Card).

Contest Rules

  • The challenge is open to everyone, except employees and families of employees of Vention Inc. Multiple entries are welcome. Team entries are welcome.
  • All entries must be submitted by Tuesday, July 31st, 2018.
  • By entering the contest, you:
    • Accept the official Vention Terms & Conditions.
    • Agree to be bound by the decisions of the judges.
    • Warrant that you are eligible to participate.
    • Warrant that the submission is your original work.
    • Warrant that neither the work nor its use infringes on the intellectual property rights (whether a patent, utility model, functional design right, aesthetic design right, trademark, copyright or any other intellectual property right) of any other person.
    • Warrant that participation shall not constitute employment, assignment, or offer of employment or assignment.
    • Are not entitled to any compensation or reimbursement for any costs.
    • Agree that Vention has the right to promote all entries.
  • Design must be completed on Vention 3D MachineBuilder using at least 75% Vention parts to be eligible. External parts can also be imported in the assembly, as required.
  • Design properties (i.e., name, description, category, tags) and design thumbnail have to be defined for the design to be eligible
  • Design properties must include the tag “July 2018 Design Challenge” to be eligible
  • Design must be published to Vention’s public library to be eligible
  • Design has to be started from scratch and cannot be customized from an existing design available on the Vention website


Participation Steps

  • Create your Vention account and complete your profile. Make sure you turn on “Public Profile” in your About Me section.
  • Start a new design and give it an interesting title and description. Be sure to add tags and design a great solution to this month’s challenge.
  • Publish to the Vention library.
